Together against food waste! Did you know that private households in Switzerland are among the biggest producers of food waste? Around a third of all food ends up as waste. With public fridges, Madame Frigo offers the Swiss population a practical and simple way to reduce their own food waste. At the same time, the fridges promote social commitment. To counteract the problem of food waste in the long term, Madame Frigo also carries out various awareness-raising measures.
Madame Frigo is more than just a name - it is an idea, a movement based on the simple but effective principle of community and sharing. Their public fridges are a place where food is not wasted, but valued and used.
The idea behind Madame Frigo is as simple as it is ingenious: it offers a solution to the all-too-common problem of food waste. Everyone knows it - the fridge at home is full, and yet at the end of the week some food ends up in the bin because it wasn't used in time. Whether it's because you spontaneously go out to eat with friends, order a meal or go on a trip - the leftover food is often forgotten and ultimately thrown away.
This is where Madame Frigo's public fridges come into play. They offer a solution to this dilemma by creating a platform for exchanging food. Instead of throwing it away, people can leave their surplus but still edible food in the public fridges. This food is then available for other people who would like to take it. This not only reduces food waste, but also creates a community that supports and cares for each other.
This is how it works:
The fridges are available to all interested parties as an exchange platform. You can bring your remaining, still edible food to Frigo and also take products home yourself. In this way, you help to sustainably reduce food waste in Switzerland.
You must observe the following rules when using the public fridges:
- The fridges can be found in publicly accessible locations and are available to everyone for food swaps.
- The following foods are allowed in the fridge: fruit and vegetables, bread. In addition, sealed products that have reached the best-before date, but not the use-by date. Meat or fish, alcohol and products that have already been opened or processed (e.g. cooked) are not permitted.
- A team of volunteers from the neighborhood looks after the Frigo. They take care of the fridge's hygiene and regularly check the contents. Every user is asked to leave the Frigo clean. The use of the fridge is the responsibility of the user. The persons operating the fridges assume no liability. The same applies to the Madame Frigo association.
Madame Frigo no longer wants to see food that is still edible rotting or being thrown away and thus polluting the environment. Don't you want to either? Help Madame Frigo to conquer the whole of Switzerland and join us in the fight against food waste.
